About Us

GhAWA (Ghana Association of Western Australia) is an association representing the community of Ghanaians and others who associate with Ghana and residing in Western Australia.
To build a more vibrant and inclusive Association that offers support for Ghanaians currently living in WA and facilitates development and growth opportunities for current and future generations.

Below are six of our major policy areas and the related strategies/actions.

We provide support for community members when necessary and possible.

Strategy/Action

Our Welfare committee facilitates the development of a welfare policy, which sets out the framework for operating our welfare fund.

We keep the community and interested partners informed about issues and events in WA concerning Ghanaians.

Strategy/Action

  • We have instituted a platform where we invite health professionals to educate community members on health and wellbeing. We also invite government officials, from Ghana and Australia, to interact with community members on pertinent issues.
  • We have made information readily accessible and available to the Ghanaian community by increasing our presence on social media, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
  • Our phone line and Mailbox are all active 24/7. Our website has been redesigned to make the platform more interactive and information relevantly up to date.

We assist new Ghanaian migrants in WA to settle in Australia.

Strategy/Action

  • We have redefined our member database to include all Ghanaians in WA. Our last update/registration process was March 7, 2020.
  • We have also developed programs that assist new Ghanaian migrants to settle in WA.
    • We have commenced negotiations to appoint GhAWA Representatives on various University/TAFE campuses where there are Ghanaians.
    • We are also working towards the appointment of Representatives in major towns in WA, including Mandurah, Albany and Bunbury.
    • We are liaising with Ghanaian professionals to explore employment and career opportunities for members.

We encourage and teach interested members about Ghanaian traditions and culture

Strategy/Action

  • In the short to medium term, we plan to have a Community Centre where Ghanaian traditions and culture can be housed. This strategy shall provide avenues for the youth and children to identify with and learn about Ghanaian culture and values.
  • Drawing from the experiences of the elderly in the Ghanaian community, we continue to organise events to celebrate and promote our culture to preserve our heritage.

Entrepreneurial empowerment projects and youth capacity building programs for community members.

Strategy/Action

  • Knowing how entrepreneurial Ghanaians are, we organise empowerment and entrepreneurial workshops.
  • We also have programs which provide the youth with employable skills.

Recognition and Awards for outstanding community members

Strategy/Action

We have an Award Scheme which recognises and celebrates Ghanaians who have contributed immensely in diverse ways to the development of the Ghanaian community in WA.
